An Anglo-Japanese dramatic musical work inspired by Junichiro Tanizaki’s ‘The Key’(1956). The book follows four characters; The Husband, Ikuko (The Wife), Toshiko (The Daughter) and Kimura (The Lover) and is told through the diary entries of the married couple, both written on the assumption that the other will read their dairy. The work is promenade and takes place in four rooms of a traditional-style Japanese house with an ensemble of four trios performing simultaneously:
This piece is an experimental work bringing Japanese and English creatives and instruments together and giving dramatic life to the work of a young, talented composer.
Development continues in 2017 with a view to performances in 2018.

CREATING MOVEMENTWhole Hog Theatre's role in the research and development of The鍵Key was to give life to the character of The Lover, Kimura.
Kimura is the only one of the four characters to be portrayed by a dancer; a physical manifestation of his most mysterious and unfathomable presence. In the novella, Kimura is only seen from the point of view of either The Husband or The Wife and the reader has no idea of his true his motives, character or thoughts. They must devise this for themselves. So too will it be with the audience who must fathom him through the the physical story of his body, and the words of the other characters as well as his own. We spent two weeks in evening rehearsals with wonderful performer Rikki Metsugi of 5-Jigen Theatre Company and used Pina Bausch method of devising to create movement. We focussed on process over product, working from the inside out inspired by her words: "I'm not interested in how people move, but what moves them" |
