The full production of Francesca Le Lohe's new site-specific dramatic musical work「The鍵Key」based on Junichiro Tanizaki's novella is coming again to Tokyo this year. The world's first stage adaptation of Magia Record video game, from the award-winning Puella Magi Madoka Magica (魔法少女まどか☆マギカ)
franchise, starring idol group Keyakizaka46 premiered on the 24th August - 9th September 2018 Tokyo Akasaka Act Theatre Director: Akiko Kodama Creative Director: Alexandra Rutter (Whole Hog Theatre) The Puella Magi Madoka Magica franchise (trailer here) has received widespread critical acclaim for it's unconventional approach to the magical girl sub-genre as a darkly powerful metaphor for depression in young girls.
This female-led production starred an all-female cast; 10 members of Keyakizaka46 lead by female director Akiko Kodama (Live Spectacle Naruto, Fairy Tail stage plays) and Alex as Creative Director with a puppetry focus. |
RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT IN TOKYO
Whole Hog Theatre is continuing its research and development in Tokyo as we work to become leaders in the field of Anglo-Japanese collaborative theatrical work. We hope to build further on the UK-Japan partnerships initiated with Princess Mononoke to create new, collaborative adaptations of Japanese source material that encourage diversity and new audiences in the theatre.
