Alexandra Rutter

Alex trained at Warwick University graduating in 2011 with a 1st Class BA (Hons) in Theatre and Performance, she founded Whole Hog Theatre in 2012 and was a Daiwa Scholar (2015 -17). Her work has been featured in The Theatre Careers Handbook , The Japan Times and The Wall Street Journal. Her directing début was an award-winning adaptation of FIVE KINDS OF SILENCE at Warwick Arts Centre 2010 and The National Student Drama Festival 2011 where it won the Festgoers Award (Best Production). Her most notable work is PRINCESS MONONOKE
(2013) the world's first and only adaptation of a Hayao Miyazaki film, with the kind permission of Studio Ghibli, produced in partnership with Dwango, Nippon TV Network, The Yomiuri Shimbun and more which broke box office records at The New Diorama Theatre selling out in 4.5 hrs and playing to over 10,000 people at The AiiA Theatre Tokyo. Alex is currently resident in Tokyo where she is working on creating various animation to stage collaborative adaptations and building collaborations with companies such as Nelke Planning, Tokyo. In 2017, she wrote, directed and choreographed a new adaptation of TRISTAN AND ISOLDE (2017) and was creative director on MAGIA RECORD (2018). In addition, she has volunteered as a dramaturg on development of Francesca Le Lohe's new site-specific musical work「The鍵Key」based on Junchiro Tanizaki's Novel, collaborated with Gekidan Kaitaisha, and completed two Ankoku Butoh training intensive with POHRC in collaboration with Hijakata Tatsumi Archive Keio University Art Center, Ima Tenko and Yuri Nagaoka & Seisaku and Kanazawa Butoh Kan. She has also worked as a professional transcriber with clients such as Simon McBurney, Complicite. |
